Beginning March 15, 2010, Peoria Disposal Company (PDC) will begin to deliver recycling containers to residents who have registered for the City of Peoria's recycling program on or before March 12th. Delivery of containers is expected to take approximately two weeks (or through March 26th) for the initial customers. For customers signing up after March 12th, container delivery will take place within two weeks of registration. PDC's new collection schedule will commence April 2nd for Monday trash and yard waste customers.

Subject: Applications Available for Neighborhood Cleanups

Applications are available to registered neighborhood associations that want trash and landscape dumpsters free of charge for neighborhood cleanups. Associations can apply for up to two dumpsters for neighborhood cleanups that can be scheduled between April 3rd and November 6th. Peoria Disposal Company will deliver dumpsters to the cleanups, which are held on a Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Associations may request one dumpster for landscape waste and one for trash, or two for trash, or two for landscape waste, for a cleanup. In addition, upon request the city will provide up to 100 cleanup announcement flyers and three yard signs to promote the date and time of the cleanup.

Subject: 2010 YARDWASTE COLLECTION

The 2010 yard waste collection season begins on Monday, March 15, 2010, and ends Friday, December 10, 2010, for City of Peoria residents served by Peoria Disposal Company (PDC).

Yardwaste set out for collection must be in:
• Garbage cans marked “Yardwaste only” which do not exceed 32 gallons in size nor 50 lbs. in weight.
• Paper yardwaste bags which do not exceed 50 lbs. in weight
• Bundles which do not exceed 5’ in length or 50 lbs. in weight

Cans, bags, and bundles which exceed the size and weight limits will not be collected. Each collection route serves approximately 1,200 homes each day; adhering to the size and weight limits is essential in avoiding injuries to collection employees.

The only container larger than 32-gallon size, collected by PDC, is the 96-gallon wheeled tote carts rented from PDC. These tote carts are manufactured to be compatible with the lift mechanism on PDC’s vehicles. The monthly rental fee is $2.50.

On March 20, 2010, Senator Dave Koehler, Representative Jehan Gordon and Mayor Jim Ardis will host their second Community Call To Action forum and workshop aimed at addressing quality of life issues in our community. The forum will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon, at the Dream Center, 714 Hamilton Boulevard.

The goal of the second forum will be to focus on youth issues and identify problems that impact our quality of life and brainstorm possible solutions. We will also be identifying an area of the city to serve as a community project.

We are inviting the community to serve as knowledgeable resources in your respective fields at this event.

In addition to generating new ideas, we hope that this Community Call to Action will institute a renewed effort on behalf of Peoria citizens and community leaders alike to make positive interventions in the lives of our young people. We hope you will join us and take action.

Subject: Registration deadline of non-owner occupied/rental property approaching

The deadline to register your non-owner occupied/rental property for 2010 is a little over two weeks away. Failure to register your property by March 1st, 2010 can result in penalties.

City Ordinance 5-521 requires that all non-owner occupied dwellings in the City of Peoria be registered with the City of Peoria. Registration applications are available on our website by following the links at PeoriaInspections.com. They are also available in the Code Enforcement office Monday through Friday, 7:30-5:00. Please fill out and return the application along with the $25.00 registration fee to 456 Fulton St. Suite 401, Peoria, IL 61602. If you have registered a property in 2009, you may renew and make payment for 2010 through the Illinois E-pay system via the City of Peoria website.

Subject: City of Peoria Curbside Recycling Sign-Up Contest

There’s a new curbside recycling program in town! The City of Peoria, Peoria County Recycling & Conservation Department and local activist group, Global Warming Solutions Group of Central Illinois are conducting a contest for Peoria’s school, church, and civic groups with $1,500.00 available in cash prizes. The contest is sponsored by Peoria County’s Department of Recycling and Resource Conservation, Midwest Fiber Recycling, and Rehrig Pacific.

What is it? Peoria Recycling Contest. A contest to increase the number of City of Peoria households that participate in the new curbside recycling program.

How do organizations get involved? All contest information is available on the Global Warming Solution Group’s website, www.gwsolutionsgroup.com or by contacting Kiersten Sheets at (309)251-4950 or 676-7657.

What can be won? Prizes awarded based on the number of curbside recyclers your group recruits:
First One $500 prize
Second Two $250 prizes
Third Three $100 prizes

The contest runs from February 15, 2010 to April 15, 2010. Winners will be announced at the Forest Park Nature Center Earth Day Celebration on April 24, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at the Global Warming Solutions Group table.

Subject: Garbage Collection Schedule Changes 

Please take notice of residential garbage collection schedule changes due to the observance of Christmas on Friday, December 25, 2009 and New Year's Day, Friday, January 1, 2010. Regular weekday scheduled curbside refuse collection services for Fridays these weeks will be delayed one day, to Saturday, for Monday through Saturday during the week of December 28 through December 31 and again Monday through Friday for the week of January 5 through January 8, 2010.

The 2010 yard waste collection will resume the third week of March, 2010. If you have any questions, please call Waste Management at 694-6246 (until December 31, 2009), Peoria Disposal Company at 674-5176 (after January 1, 2010), or the Public Works Department at 494-8800.

Subject: RESIDENTIAL CURBSIDE REFUSE COLLECTION

Full detailed information on services, including registering for recycling and/or refuse rolling carts, delivery of carts, recycling bins, subscription/registration services, new service start dates, contact numbers and a dedicated customer service line, will be available once a contractual agreement is in place between the City and PDC. It is the intention and expectation that the citizens of Peoria will see no change in refuse collection service or landscape waste collection service (which starts in mid-March).
